Posted by zi.editor on March 23rd, 2007 in Movers & Shakers.

Ted Tipler finally lost his battle with cancer, and died in Bulawayo on 15 March 2007 at the age of 73. He was a founder member of the Computer Society of Zimbabwe, having joined the Bulawayo Chapter in 1974. He was made an Honorary Member in 1984 which status was subsequently converted to FELLOW in 1992.

Ted served as Vice-president of the Society from 1979 to 1981, and President from  1981 to 1983. He continued as an elected member of Council until 1991, and was co-opted, and carried out numerous assignments for the Society, for several years thereafter.

Among many of his notable achievements, Ted was the architect of the Society’s fulltime secretariat which opened in 1997 and was also the Project Manager for the production and publication of the Society’s first ICDL training manuals.

His continuous interest in the welfare of the Society earned him the reputation of being the wise man of CSZ to whom all could turn for advice, and this role continued until quite recently.

The Computer Society was indeed fortunate to have, in its ranks, a man of Ted’s calibre, professionality and high ethical standards, and the enormous contribution he made . He will be greatly missed.

On behalf of all its members, the Computer Society extends its sincere condolences, to Ted’s wife and family in this very sad loss.
