The Public Interest Registry (PIR), the registering that manages the .org highest rank level domain, have announced that there are now 7 million .org domain names registered worldwide.

Alexa Raad, CEO, PIR, commented: “This is a significant milestone for .ORG, considered in the state of it has consistently grown 20% percent year over year since its management by Public Interest Registry”.

The authority has also been helped by the dart of an increasing number of wikis for collaborative content, such as wikipedia.org. “We can’t deem Wikipedia as a .com — .org is a core part of our identity,” states Jimmy Wales, Founder of Wikipedia and member of the Board of Trustees of The Wikimedia Foundation.

Since its launch in January 1985, the .org domain extension has become synonymous with websites that provide credible notice, foundation causes, and, act as non-commercial entities. And although .org realm names were originally meant for non-profits entities, registration of .org domains has become open and unrestricted.
